Judge Grants Hearing for Scott Peterson, Serving Life Sentence for Wife’s Murder

Scott Peterson in court

Mount Washington, Kentucky - Less than two months after the Los Angeles Innocence Project took on the case of Scott Peterson, a judge in San Mateo County, California, has scheduled a status hearing. Peterson, convicted in 2004 for the murder of his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn son, has been granted this hearing in light of the Innocence Project’s request for new evidence from the original trial. The goal is to exonerate Peterson, who has consistently maintained his innocence.

The hearing, where Peterson will appear remotely, will be overseen by Judge Elizabeth Hill, with representation from the LA Innocence Project in person. This development follows the project’s claims of newly discovered evidence that supports Peterson’s claim of innocence, raising questions about who was responsible for the abductions and killings of Laci and their unborn son, Conner.

The Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub

March 8, 1973 - The Whiskey Au Go Go Fire

The Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub in Brisbane, Australia, was firebombed on March 8, 1973. Two drums of gasoline were ignited in the foyer of the building where the club was located. There were 50 people inside the club at the time. Most were able to escape by jumping out of windows or via the rear stairs, which was the lone emergency exit. However, it was poorly marked and the path out was blocked by crates of bottles, leading to the death of 15 people from carbon monoxide poisoning. Of the 15 who died, 10 were patrons, three were staff, and two were members of the band performing that night.
